#68 Misterwives - "Money On My Mind" (Sam Smith Cover)

Say hello to Misterwives. I saw them back in 2013 when they opened for Metric. I thought they were pretty dumb but the singer had lots of youthful energy. Their brand of indie pop seemed a bit childish for an opening act for Emily Haines but I figured they were Canadian and moved on.

In 2014 though, I found out they were from NYC (though it’s tough to imagine any of these kids grew up in one of the 5 boroughs. They formed in 2012 as an 80s cover band and now they have moved all the way to the status of being a 2010’s cover band. Entering the chart at number 68 with what I’d have to call is the “Best Cover Song of 2014” I have to admit I didn’t even know if was a cover song the first 3 times I heard it, I just thought they made a damn catchy tune!

The original artist is Sam Smith and once I heard the original, I knew why I’d never heard it before. Singer Mandy Lee does take the cover to a clever plot twist in the bridge near the end when she adds a few lines from the Notorious BIG’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems”.  She gets cred for that.
